LORE

The Stories of Salem. Live. Unfiltered.

LORE is a live storytelling event at the Salem Playhouse featuring real people sharing true, personal stories on stage. For our first LORE, storytellers will build their stories around the theme:

“This year, I am thankful for…”

Stories can be funny, heartfelt, unexpected, moving, awkward, or completely ordinary. You do not need to be an actor, writer, or experienced storyteller to participate. We are looking for people with authentic stories they want to share.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

To be considered as a storyteller, submit a 2–3 minute video introducing yourself and the story you would like to tell. Your submission should give us a sense of your story, how it connects to the theme, and why you would like to share it with an audience. You do not need to submit a finished or fully scripted story.

Selected storytellers will work with the LORE team to develop, shape, and prepare their stories for a 6–10 minute live performance at the Salem Playhouse.

IMPORTANT DATES

Submissions Due: October 13
Performance: November 21
Location: Salem Playhouse

No acting experience is required. No professional storytelling experience is required.

You just need a story worth telling.

THE LAWS OF LORE

LORE is about real people telling real stories. You don’t need to be an actor, a writer, or a professional storyteller. You don’t need a perfectly polished script. You just need a story that is yours, that means something to you, and that you’re willing to share.

YOUR STORY SHOULD...

BE TRUE.

LORE is about true, personal storytelling. Your story should be nonfiction and based on something you actually experienced.

BE YOURS.

Tell us a story that happened to you.

CONNECT TO THE THEME.

Every LORE has a theme, and your story should have a genuine connection to it.

KEEP THE LENS ON YOURSELF.

Tell your own story rather than trying to explain someone else’s culture, identity, community, or experience.

RESPECT THE PEOPLE IN YOUR STORY.

True stories often involve other real people. The people may not always be good people, but they must be treated with respect.

THE MOST IMPORTANT LAW OF LORE

Don’t worry about sounding like a professional storyteller.

We aren’t looking for professional storytellers.

We’re looking for you.

Tell us something true. Make us care. Take us somewhere we haven’t been.

Then leave us with a story we’ll remember.
