Agnes Buchanan

Agnes has worked as a communications consultant, managing editor, senior copywriter, and business journalist. She began her career in Human Resources at a major manufacturing company where she became committed to improving the way organizations “speak” to employees and helping people better understand complicated information. That experience inspired her to earn a master's degree in mass communication from Boston University and build a career focused on making complex information and choices clear and relevant to a variety of audiences.

Agnes is a longtime member and former board member of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Her work has been recognized with a national Business Insurance award for excellence in business communication and an IABC ACE Award for excellence.

A member of the First Universalist Society of Salem for more than twenty years, Agnes served as clerk for several terms. When the historic church building transitioned to a community nonprofit organization, Agnes signed on as a founding board member of the 211 Bridge Street Corporation, now doing business as the Salem Playhouse. She is deeply committed to preserving the building's legacy and sharing its stories, and she sees the Salem Playhouse as a place for future generations to find the same sense of enrichment and belonging that her family experienced there.

She also spent five years as the publicity chair for the Salem Music Boosters, promoting the young artists in the city’s public schools.

Now retired from full-time work, Agnes works at the Peabody Essex Museum as a security guard. Agnes enjoys yoga, Qi Gong, paddleboarding, gardening, swimming, and spending time in nature. She is also proud to be Kaiden's "Bapci," Ryan and Tatiana's mom, and Jo's wife.
